Watch: Woman documents her incredible eight stone weight loss journey

A woman has revealed how a stranger’s cruel comment about her height sparked her incredible eight stone (51kg) weight loss.

Makeda Roberts, 27, from Croydon was inspired to review her diet and fitness regimen in January 2021 after a man made a nasty remark about her weight, which prompted her to change her life .

After joining a slimming group and starting home workouts, by November 2022 the customer service associate had gone from 19th (121kg) to 11th (70kg), going from a size 22 to a size 10 .

Roberts says she is now grateful for the horrific comment, which led her to embark on her weight loss journey.

“I always struggled with my weight, I yo-yoed all through my 20s and into my teens,” she explains.

Recalling the experience of a stranger commenting on her weight, she says: “Someone on the street on a bike stopped me and yelled, ‘You look beautiful’, before turning around and adding: ‘ Just kidding, you’re a big b’****’.”

Although obviously heartbreaking, Roberts says it became a turning point for her, encouraging her to regain her health.

“I just thought I had to fend for myself,” she says. “I didn’t want words to hurt me anymore.”

Roberts started by tackling what she describes as an addiction to fried chicken, which she used to have up to three times a week, totaling an annual outlay of £2.6,000 on meals to take away.

“I loved anything fried,” she says. “I would have six wings and fries, from KFC a three piece chicken box meal and a burger.”

But after deciding to change her lifestyle, Roberts decided to eat cold turkey with fried foods and hasn’t eaten fried chicken and fries since embarking on her weight loss journey. weight.

Instead, she joined Slimming World and adopted a healthier diet, replacing fried chicken with salmon and fries with broccoli.

“When I left school and went to college and university, I had no control over myself and the pounds piled on over the years,” she explains.

“The lockdown made it worse. I was eating fried chicken and fries every day and lots of soft drinks.

“I also loved burgers, kebabs and McDonalds, but I haven’t touched junk food since I started my weight loss journey.

“I haven’t eaten fried chicken, pizza and McDonalds in a year – I’ve forgotten how it tastes.

“I have an addictive personality so I know if I had one bite of burger it would be this one.”

Along with making healthy changes, she now only cooks with Frylite oil.

“I have tunnel vision,” she explains of her new eating habits. “I’ll take a healthy granola bar instead of cookies.

“I still like going out and partying, but I consider having a drink my pleasure now.

“I won’t end my night with chicken and fries anymore. I’ll come home at 5 a.m. and cook canned eggs or salmon instead.

“Before, I didn’t know how to cook.”

Roberts also changed her exercise regimen, starting with doing 30-minute high-intensity workouts four times a week at home.

In addition to a core attack class — an intense abdominal workout that includes twists and Russian planks — she also does maximum cardio, which includes high knees, burpees, squats, ankle taps and high jumps.

After changing her diet and starting her fitness program, Roberts says she saw consistent weight loss over the months.

“People have accused me of taking pills, but it’s just diet and exercise,” she says. “Everyone is so shocked, but I stuck with it and pushed so hard.

“People think it’s a quick fix, but it’s hard work and dedication – it [the weight] don’t fall right away.”

While she’s lost an impressive eight stone and currently weighs 11 stone, Roberts says her target weight is 10 stone (64kg).

“I’m still not where I want to be, but I feel like my confidence is better,” she says.

“I feel good, I’m in good shape and I can climb the stairs without getting out of breath.

The weight loss also has an impact on her style.

“I wear things that I would never have worn before,” she explains. “I’ve lost weight everywhere, even on my hands and feet. Some of my shoes are too big now.”

She hopes that by sharing her health and fitness review, it might help encourage others to embark on a similar journey.

“I want to help others keep going and inspire them to never give up,” she adds.
