Tackling Mental Health: Triad School Staff Receive New Training Tool

Mental Health Issues and schools across the state are making sure to make mental and behavioral health a priority right now. like NC PAL. Over the next few months, staff will be trained to help students who may need it. “We are seeing up to 45-50% more children struggling with significant depression now than before the pandemic,” said Charlene Wong, assistant secretary for children and families at the Department of Health and Human Services. of North Carolina. The number of school-aged children with mental health disorders continues to rise. “So in North Carolina, like most of the country, we estimate that half to three-quarters of children with mental health issues aren’t getting treatment,” Wong said. “And that’s partly because we don’t have enough providers who specialize in mental health support for children.” Line. It will be free thanks to NC DHHS. The new tool will give staff the support they need to help the children they work with every day. “So, for example, if you have a primary school with a lot of anxious children and the teacher notices that they are not paying attention in class, that school could work with an expert in child psychiatry who could give the school recommendations and guidance on things they can do in the classroom and support the students at this school,” Wong said. The program was launched in close partnership with the Department of Public Instruction to meet the needs of students across the region and the children we are currently seeing struggling with mental health issues is one of the reasons why child and family well-being and behavioral health are top priorities,” Wong said. “And this program is a great example of how we work hard to provide support for children in their communities where they already are, like schools.” Participating res has begun and will continue over the next few months. Winston- Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Guilford County Schools, and Davie County Schools are all on the list of participating districts. Mental Health Issues and schools across the state are working to make mental and behavioral health a priority right now.

School staff across North Carolina will receive mental and behavioral health training and consultation through the North Carolina Psychiatry Access Line, also known as NC PAL.

Over the next few months, staff will be trained to help students who may need it.

“We are seeing up to 45-50% more children struggling with significant depression now than before the pandemic,” said Charlene Wong, assistant secretary for children and families at the Department of Health and Human Services. of North Carolina.

The number of school-aged children with mental health issues continues to rise.

“So in North Carolina, like most of the country, we estimate that between half and three-quarters of children with mental health issues don’t receive treatment,” Wong said. “And that’s partly because we don’t have enough providers who specialize in mental health support for children.”

That’s part of the reason 130 North Carolina public schools receive mental and behavioral health training and counseling through the North Carolina Psychiatry Access Line. It will be free thanks to NC DHHS.

The new tool will give staff the support they need to help the children they work with every day.

“So, for example, if you have a primary school with a lot of anxious children and the teacher notices that they are not paying attention in class, that school could work with an expert in child psychiatry who could give the school recommendations and advice on things they can do in the classroom and support the students at this school,” Wong said.

The program was launched in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Instruction to meet the needs of students throughout the region.

“The number of children we are currently seeing struggling with mental health issues is one of the reasons why child and family well-being and behavioral health are such top priorities,” said Wong. “And this program is a great example of how we work hard to provide support for children in their communities where they already are, like schools.”

Onboarding of participating school districts has begun and will continue over the next few months.
